What to Bring With You

Below is a suggestion list of articles to bring and leave at home. Many of this you will have to take on faith, but trust us -- we've been there.

Disclaimer: The information presented is not intended to replace any official information you receive by the church regarding your mission or the mission field. We provide this information simply as a public service.

NOTE: As a rule of thumb, everything that can be purchased in the United States can be purchased in Spain, just at slightly higher prices. (Corte Ingles - Example) Spain is very modernized and "contemporary". DO NOT think you are going to a third world nation. You are going to a very progressive country (which at one time almost ruled the world) with a solid infrastructure and a vibrant, fast paced way of life.
  • Bring luggage with wheels!!!!!!!
  • Warm Clothes ...gloves, cardigan sweaters, tights, turtle necks for sisters, trench coats & thermal garments for elders (for winter -- it's a humid kind of cold, and central heating doesn't usually exist in buildings the missionaries can afford to live in).
  • Cool Clothes ... for those 100+ degree summer days, you will want a lot of short sleeved shirts. (for summer -- it's a humid kind of hot, and air conditioning doesn't exist in buildings missionaries can afford).
  • Clothing for sisters -- 'jumpers' seem to be the popular dresses for the sisters. Also bring comfortable walking shoes.
  • Buy an electrical adapter or buy your electrical appliances there (i.e., hair drier, iron, tape player) there. They use 220V and we use 110V.
  • DON'T buy any church videos in the MTC. Their TV and video players are NOT compatible with ours.
  • Bring a recipe book (even things that we take for granted here don't exist there, like ranch dressing to name one example)
  • Take a journal and write in it every day. You will be glad you did.
  • Take a mini-address book to keep the number of members and friends handy. You will even need the info after you come home.
  • Take some extra $$$ for souvenirs. You can buy cool swords and Lladro figurines. They are a little pricey but they are much cheaper to buy in Spain than here!
  • Go to a bookstore and buy a text book on Spanish History and Culture. Your mission will be more rewarding and fulfilling if you appreciate the artists a great thinkers that Spain has produced. Plus, people there will respect your opinions because you "know something" about them.
  • Pictures of you family (a good way to show the Spaniards that you are loved by someone, even though they may find it hard to believe! :)
  • Photo album (you'll have lot's of pictures that will get ruined between transfers, plus another way to BRT [build relationships of trust] with Spaniards about your past areas)
  • If you prefer American name brands, take deodorant, toothpaste, makeup, and feminine hygiene products with you. Over there these products DO exist, but the good quality products are very expensive.
  • Don't forget to SMILE. People are attracted to someone who looks happy and upbeat.
  • NEVER EVER say ANYTHING negative about any other missionary or member. It WILL eventually get back to them, and you are on your mission to build people, not bring them down.
  • ALWAYS compliment the Spaniards on their excellent cooking, even if it doesn't appeal to you. They pride themselves very much on their food, so be polite and make a friend -- make it a point to tell them it's SUPER BUENO! (Each area usually has a member who is an awesome cook!)
